County Durham's Green Revolution: A Pioneering Path to Carbon Neutrality

In a world grappling with the urgent need for sustainable development, County Durham stands as a trailblazer in the quest for a carbon-neutral future. The county council's commitment to environmental stewardship is not just a vision; it's a tangible reality manifested through a comprehensive Climate Emergency Response Plan, setting the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

At the heart of County Durham's strategy is a vision for a Carbon Neutral County, outlining transformative goals in renewable energy, transportation, and ecological conservation. Anchored in  fairness and community engagement principles, the plan positions County Durham as a leader in combating climate change and fostering a circular economy with minimal waste.

County Durham actively translates its vision into action through initiatives like the Decarbonisation Programme. This program aims to implement renewable and low-carbon energy infrastructure, promote electric vehicles, and decarbonise assets and logistic facilities. The Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP2), climate champions, and smart campaigns further support businesses and communities in adopting sustainable practices, laying the groundwork for a resilient future.

One of the county's key initiatives is exploring innovative solutions like lithium extraction and green projects under the Heat Network Strategy in Horden and Seaham. By tapping into the potential of mine water, County Durham is advancing technology and  promoting environmental stewardship through lithium extraction. This valuable resource aligns with the region's commitment to sustainability.

The Durham University-led ‘Durham Geothermal Research Demonstrator Network’ is a significant step forward in the county's commitment to green technology. This geothermal energy R&D programme focuses on decarbonising heating demand, supporting infrastructure development, and positioning County Durham as a leader in sustainable technology.

Investment Opportunity for a Greener Future

Northern Lithium in the Pennine Orefield

Northern Lithium's project in the Pennine Orefield aims to produce 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium annually. With secured mineral rights, land access, and drilling permits, this project positions Weardale and the North East as a new centre of lithium production, supporting the UK's growing demand for lithium-ion batteries.

Power Roll innovative solar film manufacturer

Power Roll, based at Jade Business Park in Seaham, is the first facility in the world to produce low-cost, lightweight, flexible solar film for renewable energy generation using patented micro-groove technology.  Power Roll’s unique solar film is capable of producing ultra-low-cost green electricity that is significantly cheaper to make than existing flexible solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, and is suitable for non-load-bearing rooftops, building integration, transport, portable applications, and off-grid projects. Having opened its pilot manufacturing facility in County Durham last year, the company is now raising investment to set up a commercial-scale factory.

Horden Mine Water Heat Network

The Horden Mine Water Heat Network explores the utilisation of geothermal heat from abandoned mines to benefit the community. This feasibility project, supported by various partners, has received funding to investigate the potential to heat homes, schools, businesses, and greenhouses, creating employment opportunities and maximising social benefits.

Seaham Garden Village Mine Water Heat Network

This groundbreaking project, the first of its kind in the UK, involves the development of 1,500 homes using heat from abandoned mines. Partnering with TOLENT and the Coal Authority, County Durham aims to establish the UK's first large-scale mine water district heating scheme, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

County Durham invites investors to join its ambitious net zero agenda and contribute to sustainable development. By aligning financial objectives with the county's mission, investors can play a pivotal role in shaping a greener, more prosperous future for all.
